After eight years as a seasonal farm laborer with Da Neibru Farming Co, Hilario Gutierrez Jr decided to explore new opportunities. In September of 2024, he came to the Fresno-9i Office seeking assistance with truck driving training.
Following his eligibility determination and approval for Grant #60923-FAP, Hilario was assigned a Case Manager and participated in a thorough assessment. Consequently, he enrolled in the truck driving program just one week after the grant approval. He successfully finished his vocational training program, achieving completion one week ahead of the initially anticipated program end date. In November of 2024, Hilario obtained his Commercial Class A driver’s license, which enhanced his employment prospects and career options.
Upon completing training, Hilario met with his assigned Case Manager. He was assisted with the development of a professional resume and identified potential employers. He also received instructions on uploading his resume and submitting applications via platforms like CalJobs, Indeed, and Craigslist. He participated in a one-on-one job readiness workshop where he strengthened his interviewing skills.
Hilario’s tuition was covered by the FAP Grant. To ensure successful completion, he was also co-enrolled with DOL: Adult 167 NFJP Grant to leverage the funds. Throughout Hilario’s program participation, he received assistance with supportive services, including food assistance, utility payments, and work- related clothing/shoes to ensure employment retention.
In February of 2025, Hilario began working as a truck driver with Noviland Technologies Inc. at $20.00/hour, working M-F, 45 hours weekly, and receiving paid vacation and sick leave. He is still employed there, now earning $21.00/hour. His maximum earnings while working as a seasonal farm worker were $13,900.00/year, compared to his current earnings of $38,000.00.
Hilario expresses gratitude to 9i and staff for the opportunity he was provided to learn a new work skill. He states that this new ability has significantly improved his life and the lives of his family members.
